Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's Space Flight

The following is an editing exercise for the final assessment, again using raw Reuters footage.

The problems with this were that there were only really three shots in the video that I used (that of Medvedev giving speeches and visiting the space centre). Also Medvedev's speeches were very long, and we had a 1:30m time limit, so it was difficult to edit it smoothly.

"Today is the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first orbit around the Earth and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev is honouring the occasion. Jayne Horswill reports."

Video: Nintendo 3DS Release

A short news package on the release of the Nintendo 3DS & how the internet helped dramatically with advertising and sales. Featuring an interview with the director of Konami, Hideo Kojima.

Both of us that were working on this were ill, but I managed to edit it together. There is an obvious lack of piece to camera though, and due to lack of footage I had to use anything that I could find from the internet and YouTube to fill out the story. Also the Japanese interview should be dubbed over in English rather than just the subtitles.

Video: UCA Review, games of 2011

A short video podcast about the releases of 2011 that have already come out, and titles we're excited for in the year to come.

It's clear here that we used far too much light; the squinting is kind of obvious! We should have perhaps used different camera angles and edited shots together to make it more dynamic, as it's quite stagnant at the moment. Also, we didn't plan it perhaps as well as we'd have liked.

Video: Nicaraguan President Supports Gaddafi

A short video about the Nicaraguan President giving a speech showing his support for Muammar Gaddafi as the UN begins their attack on the tyrant.

This was another editing exercise using raw Reuters footage, except I only had half an hour to do it as I had to go to a meeting with the Dean, and didn't have time to find the translation so had to translate myself. It sounds like I'm making excuses but in fact I am proud of what I managed to produce myself in such a short amount of time, and it was a short, sharp lesson about what deadlines will be like in the business.

Video: Japan News Package

A short news package about the search and rescue effort in Japan 5 days on from the earthquake.

This was only an editing exercise; we didn't have to do filming but were instead presented with raw Reuters footage (about 10 minutes of it) and had to edit and fit it together with a voiceover. This was a good exercise in picking and choosing what footage works to keep the video interesting.

Video: Care in the NHS (Dispatches)

Channel 4's Dispatches gave three dying patients cameras to film the last days of their lives, exposing major problems in the healthcare system.

This is our second attempt at this package; we had issues with the Dispatches footage, i.e Premiere Pro could only read it as a distorted audio file, so the screenshots were not god quality.

Video: Miranda Gavin comes to the UCA

Miranda Gavin, an established freelance journalist, photographer and blogger came to the UCA to talk to the students about getting into the business and what a freelance career is like. We interviewed her and asked the students a few questions.

This was a successful package for us; the lighting in the room while Miranda was presenting was not the best, and it was maybe worth having a tripod to have steadier shots.
